When I was young my family and I would go on walks and to be honest I didn't really always love it. Sometimes I would complain. Sometimes I would complain the whole time and sometimes my dad would have to walk all the way back to get the car so we could all just go home now and be done with it.
Nothing really changed to my attitude to walking, I may have gotten a little better with nice normal level walks, but I am not a fan of going up. I don't like steep.
Cape Town has a lot of mountains everywhere, so there is a lot of steep. It is quite annoying as to get to see some of the wonderful views you have to walk up a great big steep thing. Although to be fair, it could be a lot worse, you can actually park really close to the top if you want to cheat.
Recently we have been doing a lot more walking up the mountains and it's been going a lot better. I have managed to go up a couple of steep looking mountains. Importantly - I've been able to go up them without moaning about it! I am not very fast and quite like stopping a lot to take in the view, but I am very happy the whole time. So I've definitely conquered that fear.
My new concern is that it looks like Nic and I are turning into my grandparents.
We've become really cute about our walks. We make a proper picnic and a flask of coffee. I bought a stick! I pretend it is a 'snake stick'but really it is to help me waddle along up the path. We've even talked about taking a holiday in the Lake District (which is the only place my grandparents ever went!) when we're back in England!
I suppose there are worse things to turn into. I am definitely enjoying the walking. I still have a few mini obstacles to get over till I become a 'hiker'...
The last condition means that we can't take our camera with us yet as our bag is already full of our cutesy picnic and sensible waterproof jackets. This is a shame as I've seen some really wonderful views already, I guess we'll have to go back with the camera later.

Í'm not carrying this |
- I am pretty slow
- I get tired way before anyone else (eg: Nic)
- I am not great at climbing over the big rocks and have a habit of thinking I'm stuck when I'm not
- I can't carry anything and walk

Keep going like this and you won't turn into your mother!
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand - you ARE quite like your mum at the moment (well about walking anyway!)
