I don't think it technically counts as volunteering, but there seems to be a thing going round whereby people go on cheaper holidays because they spend there time 'volunteering' to earn their keep. Here is the best website I've found about this: Ecoteer.
The website itself is obviously pretty shit, but the volunteer placements sound awesome. It all seems quite cheap too, but a lot of the placements require you to be insured and this seems to be quite a big expense (more than the actual placements).
This is our favourite so far. Its in Thailand and you stay at an elephant sanctuary for a couple of weeks and look after the elephants. It sounds awesome, so that's something we need to get on with and book.

Do you get fed for £300 per person per week? We loved our visit to the elephants in Chang Mai, even though we only stayed for a day. I especially liked the ride through a lake and the jungle. OUr elephant kept stopping off to forage along the path. She seemed quite determined! And it is hard to argue with an elephant.
ReplyDeleteI think you must get fed as well, yeah. I'm very excited about doing the elephant bit. I think a week or two would be a good amount of time to spend with them. We'll be elephant experts by then!
